Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design , or CPTED (pronounced sep-ted), is based on a theory that through property design and effective use of built environments, the incidence of crime and the fear of crime can diminish and the general quality of life can improve for a community. CPTED provides principles for planning and designing safe communities and improving safety measures of existing developments.

Art Hushen
Art Hushen is the President of the National Institute of Crime Prevention. Art was assigned to the Tampa Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau/CPTED Section.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Department’s CPTED Unit and Tampa’s first CPTED Ordinance for the Westshore Business District, which is the largest Business District in Florida.
He implemented the CPTED review process for the Tampa Parks Department Greenways and Trails Master Plan, which include over 80 miles of trails.
Art is an instructor for the Florida Attorney General’s Office specializing Basic and Advance CPTED and CPTED in Schools. He is also an Adjunct Instructor for Fox Valley Technical College specializing in CPTED. Art is recognized as Crime Prevention Specialist through the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners and is a graduate of the National Crime Prevention Institute, Fox Valley College and the American Crime Prevention Institute in both Basic and Advanced CPTED.
He is President of the National Institute of Crime Prevention, a national training company. Art holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from the University of South Florida.
